Fusus (Buccinofusus) portolaensis was named by Arnold (1908). Its type specimen is USNM 165473, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Chrysodomus portolaensis by Nomland (1917); it was recombined as Searlesia portolaensis by Carson (1925); it was recombined as Kelletia (Searlesia) dira portolaensis by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Calicantharus portolaensis by Woodring and Bramlette (1950); it was recombined as Lirabuccinum portolaensis by Hendy (2020).
