Taxonomy
Drillia penicillata was named by Carpenter (1864). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 6320, a shell.

It was recombined as Pseudomelatoma penicillata by Dall (1919), Grant and Gale (1931), Skoglund (2002) and Hendy (2021).
