Hyalonema was named by Gray (1832) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Hyalonematidae.
It was assigned to Amphidiscosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hyalonematidae by Brückner et al. (2003) and Finks et al. (2004).
