Pelicaspongia was named by Rigby (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl D Fras Sepkoski's reference number: 230]. It is not extant. Its type is Pelicaspongia sterea.
It was assigned to Amphidiscosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pelicaspongiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
