Wilsonastrum colonicum was named by Jansonius (1962). It is not extant. Its type locality is Triassic, Peace River Area, which is in a Griesbachian/Anisian marine shale in the Toad/Grayling Formation of Canada. It is the type species of Wilsonastrum.
