Potamides (Potamidopsis) californica was named by Squires (1991). Its type specimen is LACMIP 11300 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACMIP 7226 - Beartrap Creek [Matilija Sandstone], which is in a Lutetian coastal mudstone/sandstone in the Matilija Formation of California.
