Caucombrus histiopterygius was named by Bannikov (2020). Its type specimen is PIN 5419/14 and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Caucombrus.

A. F. Bannikov 2020Body elongated, fusiform; its depth considerably shorter then head length. Caudal pedun- cle short and slender. Head pointed anteriorly; its length is 2.5–3.9 times in standard body length (SL). Neurocranium width, more than twice shorter than its length. Supraoccipital crest relatively low. Eyes rela- tively small, orbit diameter not exceed 23% of head length. Mouth large, terminal, not protrusile; upper jaw protrudes forward. Premaxillary ascending pro- cess fused with articular process, extended at base; its anterodorsal edge oblique. Lower jaw articulation located under posterior quarter of orbit. Jaw teeth rel- atively widely spaced, rather large, pointed, uniserial, mostly compressed laterally; several anterior teeth curved and conical. Preopercle slightly curved, with short lower branch and even free edge (in larvae with spines). Vertebrae 52–54, of which 24–26 abdominal and 28 caudal; about half of posterior abdominal ver- tebrae bear parapophyses strongly elongated posteri- orly. Centra of vertebrae of caudal peduncle gradually shortened to terminal vertebra and lack bony lateral keel. Vertebral spines very slender, several anterior neural spines somewhat widened medially. Ribs rela- tively long, strongly inclined posteriorly. Dorsal fins connected at base, first dorsal fin extended and very high anteriorly, sail-like. First dorsal fin with ca. 22 very slender spines; second dorsal fin with small spine and about 11 rather short soft rays; dorsal finlets about 11. Anal fin with two small spines and 10 soft rays, ventral finlets about 11. Anal fin shifted posteriorly relative to second dorsal-fin origin. Pectoral fins moderately long. Pelvic fins short, attached directly before pecto- rals. Caudal fin deeply-forked, with 17 principal rays and numerous upper and lower procurrent rays. Hypurostegy strongly developed. Scales very small, cycloid.
