Trigonodus carinatus was named by Stouge (1984) [= Distacodus sp. Bradshaw, 1969, p. 1149, pl. 131, figs. 3, 4. = Acontiodus robustus (Hadding), Bradshaw, 1969, p. 1148, pl. 131, figs. 8, 10, 13, 14. = Scandodus? sinuosus Mound, Bauer, 1987, p. 28, pl. 5, figs. 1, 2, 5, 7, 8; Bauer, 1989, p. 104, figs. 7.11, 7.12, 7.15-7.18.].

It was recombined as Apteracontiodus carinatus by Bauer (2010).
