Orthis gemmicula was named by Billings (1865). Its type specimen is N. M. Canada 9070, a, b, d and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Orthidium gemmicula by Hall and Clarke (1892); it was recombined as Orthidium gemmiculum by Ulrich and Cooper (1938).
