Archaeorthis subcarinata was named by Laurie (1980). Its type specimen is UTGD 97448 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Intersection of Nine Road and Florentine Road;, which is in a Castlemainian carbonate limestone in the Karmberg Formation of Australia.
