Beneckeia cognata was named by Wagner (1891). It is not extant. Its type locality is Rosenthal, Zwätzen, Jena (Schaumkalk), which is in an Anisian carbonate limestone in the Muschelkalk Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Beyrichites cognatus by Frech (1908).
