Olcostephanus (Simbirskites) mutabilis was named by Stanton (1895) [DISTRIBUTION: Valanginian; Pacific Coast North America.]. Its type specimen is USNM 23089, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Dichotomites mutabilis by Anderson (1938); it was recombined as Homolsomites mutabilis by Imlay (1956) and Imlay (1960); it was recombined as Tollia mutabilis by Imlay and Jones (1970).
