Clupeidarum posti was named by Schwarzhans (1985). Its type specimen is SADME 10319, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grange Burn Coquina, which is in a Pliocene carbonate carbonate in the Port Campbell Limestone Formation of Australia.
