Hoplichthys gobiomorphus was named by Schwarzhans (1985). Its type specimen is SAM P 19988, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Old Metropolitan Abattoirs, which is in a Priabonian marine horizon in Australia.
