Lampanyctus serratus was named by Stinton (1957). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tutamoe Survey District, which is in a Lillburnian/Waiauan marine horizon in New Zealand.
It was recombined as Lampanyctodes serratus by Schwarzhans (1980).
