Rhynchoconger otaianus was named by Schwarzhans (2019). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Otaio River Gorge, which is in a Waipawan/Mangaorapan marine sandstone in the Otaio Gorge Sandstone Formation of New Zealand.
