Waihaoclupea pinguis was named by Schwarzhans (2019). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Waihao River, south branch, which is in a Mangaorapan/Heretaungan marine carbonate in New Zealand. It is the type species of Waihaoclupea.
