Parascombrops giganteus was named by Schwarzhans (2019). Its type specimen is CD760, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Waihao River, south branch, which is in a Mangaorapan/Heretaungan marine carbonate in New Zealand.
