Taxonomy
Protomyctophum ahunga was named by Schwarzhans (2019). Its type specimen is NMNZ S.47206, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Orore Creek, which is in an Altonian marine siltstone in the Mount Harris Formation of New Zealand.
