Scopelus excisus was named by Frost (1934). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Loc 1372, which is in a Chattian marine horizon in New Zealand.
It was recombined as Diaphus (Lamprossa) excisus by Schwarzhans (1980); it was recombined as Diaphus excisus by Schwarzhans (2019).
