Taxonomy
Opistognathus wharekuriensis was named by Schwarzhans (2019). Its type specimen is NMNZ S.47538, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Head of Lake Waitaki, which is in a Duntroonian marine sandstone in New Zealand.
