Baurusuchinae was named by Montefeltro et al. (2011). It was considered monophyletic by Montefeltro et al. (2011).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Baurusuchinae by Darlim et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Baurusuchidae by Montefeltro et al. (2011), Godoy et al. (2014); and to Baurusuchidae by Darlim et al. (2021).

Montefeltro et al. 2011Medium sized baurusuchids with the medial contact for the prefrontals occurring along most of their dorsal medial edge; frontals broad, about twice the width of nasals; quadratojugal dorsal extension ending ventrally, or at the same level, of the dorsal tip of laterotemporal fenestra; quadrate fenestrae internalized in otic notch; muscle scar in the medial surface of quadrate almost straight to curved; ventral surface of choanal septum ridged.
