Archaeotetraodon bannikovi was named by Carnevale and Tyler (2010). Its type specimen is P MRSN 35/125, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pecetto di Valenza, which is in a Messinian marine horizon in Italy.
