Taxonomy
Butidae was named by Bleeker (1874). It is extant. Its type is Butis. It was considered monophyletic by Gierl et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Gobiiformes by Nelson et al. (2016); and to Gobioidei by Gierl et al. (2013), Gaudant et al. (2018).
