Ammonites scipionianus was named by d'Orbigny (1844). Its type specimen is MNHN F R.01348 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Aetomoceras scipionianum by Hyatt (1900), Spath (1922); it was recombined as Agassiceras scipionianum by Hyatt (1874), Enay et al. (1994), Corna and Dommergues (1995).
