Ammonites sternalis was named by d'Orbigny (1845) [Said to be from "von Buch MS" but this has no nomenclatural status.]. Its type specimen is MNHN.F.A02929 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cymbites sternalis by Buckman (1894); it was recombined as Paroniceras sternale by Guex (1972), Bécaud (2006), Goy and Martínez (2009) and Kovács (2010).
