Botryocyrtis was named by Ehrenberg (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp R]. It is extant. Its type is Botryocyrtis caputserpentis.

It was assigned to Cannobotryidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
