Tanystropheus fossai was named by Wild (1980). It is not extant. Its type locality is Canto Alto, Val Brembana, which is in a Norian marine horizon in the Riva di Solto Formation of Italy.
It was recombined as Sclerostropheus fossai by Spiekman and Scheyer (2019).
