Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. V. Nazarkin and A. F. Bannikov 2021Body moderately deep and laterally compressed. Snout short, with straight upper margin. Only supraoccipital and cleithrum bear superficial relief resembling twisted ropes; super- ficial bony tubercles absent. Three supraneurals. Spinous dorsal fin higher, and its base longer than that of soft dorsal fin. Anterior edge of dorsal-fin spines smooth basally. Vertebrae 25–27 (10–11 + 15–17); dorsal fin spines IX–XI; anal fin spines IV–VI. Caudal skeleton with five free hypurals and short neural spine of the second preural centrum. Scales, apparently, cycloid, thin, and not rigid or scute-like. Differs from all extant pentacerotids in having three vs two supraneurals, and lacking the rugosity and bony tubercles on the superficial bones of head and of pectoral girdle. Although total number of vertebrae in †Portentosoceros is similar to that of Recent armorheads, the number of abdominal vertebrae is smaller, and the number of caudal vertebrae greater than corresponding values of any Recent genus (Table 1).
