Beryx niger was named by Costa (1857). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sach el Aalma (Costa collection), which is in a Santonian carbonate lime mudstone in Lebanon.
It was recombined as Pycnosterinx niger by Pictet and Humbert (1866) and Davis (1887).
