Taxonomy
Pepemkay maya was named by Alvarado-Ortega and Than-Marchese (2013). Its type specimen is IHNFG-4645, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is El Chango Quarry, which is in a Cenomanian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal dolomite in the Cintalapa Formation of Mexico.
