Palaeoniscum macropthalmus was named by Agassiz (1835).

It was recombined as Palaeoniscus macrophthalmus by Agassiz (1835); it was recombined as Palaeoniscus macropthalmus by Howse (1848) and Woodward (1891); it was misspelled as Palaeoniscus macropthalmus by King (1850); it was corrected as Palaeoniscum macrophthalmus by Mickle (2017).
