Taxonomy
Rhynchodercetis regio was named by Blanco and Alvarado-Ortega (2006). Its type specimen is FCT 005 and is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Vallecillo quarry (FCT collection), which is in a Turonian offshore limestone in the Agua Nueva Formation of Mexico.
It was recombined as Hastichthys regio by Alvarado-Ortega and Díaz-Cruz (2021).
