Taxonomy
Hypsodon oblongus was named by Woodward (1901). Its type specimen is BMNH P364, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Megalops oblongus by Woodward (1901), Casier (1966); it was recombined as Protarpon oblongus by Forey (1973).
