Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
C. Riva Rossi et al. 2000Genypterus valdesensis differs from all other species of Genypterus by the presence of a foramen on infra- orbital 3 and by the square shape of infraorbital 4. Furthermore an array of morphological features taken in combination dif- ferentiates G. valdesensis from the remaining species of the genus; it differs from G. blacodes (????capensis), G. chilensis and G. maculatus by the dorsal profile of the neurocranium which is slightly slanted toward the supraoccipital, by the presence of a projection on the infraorbital 4, the presence of a central projection on the extrascapula; it differs from G. blacodes, G. bras- iliensis and G. chilensis by the posteriorly projected walls of the foramen magnum. From G. chilensis and G. maculatus it differs as follows: quadrate spine with a crest, an expanded supracleithrum, and posterior lamina of the cleithrum backwardly directed. Finally, G. valdesensis differs from G. brasiliensis by the following: ventral fossa of the frontal expanded, frontal and pterosphenotic bearing an oval depression; and the straight posterior border of the opercle.
