Nassa versicolor was named by Adams (1852). It is extant.

It was recombined as Nassa (Hima) versicolor by Tryon (1882); it was recombined as Alectrion versicolor by Dall (1917); it was recombined as Nassarius versicolor by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Phrontis versicolor by Hendy (2021).
