Macrocephalochelys pontica was named by Pidoplichko and Tarashchuk (1960). Its type specimen is IZASU 42-1, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Chelydropsis murchisoni by Joyce (2016); it was recombined as Chelydropsis pontica by Kovalchuk et al. (2017).
