Taxonomy
Ptycholepis marshi was named by Newberry (1878). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Durham fish locality (main), Totoket Mountain, which is in a Hettangian lacustrine - small siltstone in the Shuttle Meadow Formation of Connecticut.

It was corrected as Ptycholepis marshii by Hay (1902) and Schaeffer et al. (1975).

B. Schaeffer et al. 1975Differs from other species of Ptycholepis in having combined maximum width of parietals nearly equal to length and in having posterolateral corners of parietals extended posteriorly. Maxilla expanded postorbitally as in P. barboi; median gular extending to posterior border of mandible, lateral gulars mostly covered by median gular; six branchiostegals; dermal bone ornamentation weak to strong; origin of dorsal fin at fourteenth scale row; gradual change from rhomboidal to narrow flank scales in first five vertical scale rows.
