J. I. Barrientos-Lara and J. Alvarado-Ortega 2021 | An ophthalmosaurid ichthyosaur characterized by the following autapomorphies: 1) posterior lachrymal end separating both nasal and prefrontal bones; 2) extensive contact between both lachrymal and nasal bones; 3) frontals elongated medially, with a posterior lateral expansion that gives them an L-shape; and 4) postorbital bone crescent-moon shaped, large, higher than wide, covering more than two-thirds of the skull postorbital region.
Additionally, Jabalisaurus meztli exhibits the following unique com- bination of characters: 1) large orbit, orbit length/skull length ratio 0.24; 2) skull with a broad postorbital region, relative to orbit length; 3) snout slender, snout height/jaw length ratio 0.44; 4) nasal bone with a small narial process; 5) no participation of the prefrontal in the external narial opening; 6) splenial bones elongated and participating in more than half of the mandibular symphysis; 7) the distal end of humerus with three articulation areas to join: a) anterior accessory epipodial element, b) radius, and c) ulna; 8) all phalanges hexagonal in dorsal-ventral view. |
