Rhabdopleura was named by Allman (1869) [A graptolite, not the bryozoan homonym Rhabdopleura Allman 1867]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Rhabdopleuridae.

It was assigned to Rhabdopleuridae by Bulman (1970).
