Taxonomy
Plesiosaurus (Polyptychodon) mexicanus was named by Wieland (1910). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Huajuapan de Leon, Tlaxiaco, which is in a Berriasian/Hauterivian marine horizon in Mexico.
It was recombined as Plesiosaurus mexicanus by Hay (1930); it was considered a nomen vanum by Welles (1962); it was considered a nomen dubium by Buchy (2008); it was recombined as Cricosaurus mexicanus by Carbot-Chanona (2014).
