Mesolepis rhombus was named by Traquair (1890). Its type specimen is NMS 1885.54.37, a partial skeleton (Imperfect fish), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Paramesolepis rhomba by Moy-Thomas and Bradley Dyne (1938).
