Taxonomy
Chiton viseticola was named by de Ryckholt (1845). It is the type species of Gryphochiton (Chonechiton).

It was recombined as Gryphochiton (Chonechiton) viseticola by Carpenter (1882); it was recombined as Gryphochiton viseticola by Smith and Hoare (1987); it was recombined as Chonechiton viseticola by Hoare (2002).
