Ernietta was named by Pflug (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: V u]. Its type is Ernietta plateauensis. It is the type genus of Erniettidae.
It was assigned to Erniettamorpha by Sepkoski (2002); to Petalonamae by Hoyal Cuthill and Han (2018); to Erniettomorpha by Erwin et al. (2011), Darroch et al. (2018); and to Erniettidae by Runnegar et al. (2024).
