Proteurynotus traquairi was named by Moy-Thomas and Bradley Dyne (1938). Its type specimen is NMS 1891.53.31, a partial skeleton (Part of the head and most of the body, excluding most of the anal fin), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Proteurynotus.
