Palaeoniscus obliquus was named by Heckel and Kner (1861).
It was recombined as Amblypterus obliquus by Fritsch (1895); it was recombined as Paramblypterus obliquus by Štamberg (1976) and Dietze (2000); it was synonymized subjectively with Paramblypterus rohani by Štamberg (2013), Schultze et al. (2021).
