Pupa protracta was named by Sandberger (1875).

It was recombined as Vertigo (Alaea) protracta by Gottschick and Wenz (1919); it was recombined as Vertigo (Vertigo) protracta by Harzhauser and Binder (2004); it was recombined as Vertigo protracta by Harzhauser and Neubauer (2018).
