Palaeoniscus gelberti was named by Goldfuss (1847). Its type specimen is SNSB-BSPG 1871.II.1, a set of postcrania (Specimen without head - head present as impression on counterpart), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Amblypterus gelberti by Woodward (1891); it was recombined as Paramblypterus gelberti by Boy (1976).
