Pyrula modesta was named by Conrad (1848).

It was recombined as Ficus modestus by Dall (1909), English (1914), Stewart (1927), Etherington (1931), Loel and Corey (1932); it was recombined as Ficus modesta by Moore (1963), Squires (2014).
