Grammatorycnus was named by Gill (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scombridae by Uyeno and Fujui (1975); to Scomberomorini by Klawe (1977), Collette et al. (2001); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
